Week Ten - Drawing up my last portraits for this year...

Updated: Mar 3, 2022

Next week is the last week before Christmas meaning I only have time for this last drawing and then next week will consist of colour printing my previous stone and then printing the stone pictured above.

The stone above allowed me to practice a more romanticist approach to portraits this week, focusing more on perfecting technique first rather than trying to create a whole concept for one stone. I used a korn litho core in no.7 which seemed most effective for this type of work because it was a hard enough material for me to get fine lines to create tone and form in the face. The portrait on the right showing a slightly different expression, I decided to leave more suggestive than a filled in form to experiment a little with the contrast between light and dark.

After doing this I got to thinking about where I can take this further because obviously right now on the stone it is just three portraits and not much else. I think what I would like to do is create a background of expressional marks and shapes which to me express the person of whom I have drawn. So these shapes would present their energy and almost how I see them as an energy in my life. To do this I would need to potentially use another stone to create these marks and then print both stones onto one sheet of paper, I would like the background to be in a different colour, perhaps a blue tone to differentiate the marks from the face.

That is it for this week, next week will consist of doing a second etch on this stone and then printing it, I'm not sure how much time I will have to be able to colour print my old stone and also print this one with colour print behind it but if I don't get the chance I will work in my sketchbook and gum paper over Christmas and get prepared for the new year.
