Today I went downstairs in the School of Art to have a look round the gallery's as currently being shown are many different prints, I came across two pieces by Francis Rudolph and found these to particularly interest me in regards to inspiring my own work this year.

The first print by Francis Rudolph was named, Man Praying (1955/56), and it was an etching of an older man praying while sat on a chair. What I enjoyed most about this etching was the contrast between light and dark. The artist managed to illuminate the face in the portrait, bringing attention to it without it being harsh. This is something I might try with lithography, perhaps using ink on the back ground of the portrait to illuminate and direct the viewer to the portrait in the centre.

The second etching was again by the same artist, named, Four Studies (1955), depicting four lightly drawn studies of a mans portrait, from different angles and with different expressions. I liked the mark making he used to create the simple studies, the strokes were short and light, and on some areas there was very dark strokes to create a shadow behind the face which dramatically contrasted with the features.
